Last Week’s Trivia Quiz: Kander & Ebb

This year Broadway celebrated out composer Stephen Sondheim on his 80th; out Broadway composer Jerry Herman will be feted at The Kennedy Center. Out composers/lyricists John Kander and Fred Ebb have a new Broadway hit (despite the fact that Ebb died several years ago).

1. Question: Name this actor. Kander & Ebb wrote the scote to her Broadway debut musical, her biggest movie hit, her signature songs, and a wealth of other material. Answer: Liza Minnelli. “Flora The Red Menace” won her the Tony; “Cabaret” won her The Oscar, and “Liza With a Z” and “New York, New York” are her K&E hits.

2. Question: Name this Kander & Ebb musical, based on a series of diaries written by an early 20th century gay writer. The musical included an androgynous lead; the film adaptation featured a bisexual threesome. Answer: Cabaret, inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s “Berlin Stories”.

3. Question: Name this Kander & Ebb musical, a success when it first opened on Broadway, but overshadowed by another musical about dancers. In revival, it’s one of Broadway’s biggest hits.
