Senate Approves Hate Crimes Legislation. The Senate voted on 10/22/09 to extend new federal protections to people who are victimized because of their gender or sexual orientation, bringing the legislation close to reality after years of fierce debate. Bea Arthur left over $300,000 to the Ali Forney Center, which offers food, emergency housing, medical treatment, HIV testing, and educational training for as many as 1,000 young LGBT people annually.
