Newsworthy:
The National Equality March has begun organizing the Equality Across America gathering and march in Washington, DC scheduled or October 10-11 (the latter being National Coming Out Day). Among the goals: 1. Repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) so that every marriage in every state has the same federal rights. 2. Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell so that LGBT persons may serve in the military openly and with the same rights as their straight counterparts. 3.An end to workplace discrimination for everyone with an Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that protects everyone. 4. The right to adopt children and raise families like any other parents. 5. Hate Crimes legislation that includes LGBT people and protects us like any other targeted group. 6. Immigration reform that recognizes same-sex couples and ends the needless separation of families. www.NationalEqualityMarch.com
Massachusetts, the first state to legalize gay marriage, sued the U.S. government over a federal law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The federal Defense of Marriage Act interferes with the right of Massachusetts to define and regulate marriage as it sees fit, MA Attorney General Martha Coakley said. Coming Out: Stan Rosenberg, the Massachusetts state senator, has come out. (Editor's Note: Mr. Rosenberg has always been one of the state's most pro-LGBT rights legislators and a great guy). Jeanne Córdova has given $30,000 to the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives in Los Angeles, in what is believed to be the largest donation ever given by a lesbian donor to an LGBT archive. You’ll find the boys at “Poodle Beach”, near the Boardwalk at Queen Street. And, humorist Fay Jacobs captured the essence of this community in her bestselling memoir.
2. Question: Name this state, which features a beachfront LGBT resort favored by Windy City folk, and an international music festival founded in 1976 Hint: No men make music here.
3 Question: Name this LGBT resort which dates back to 1822. Its name is an English corruption of its original Spanish name, “Bone Key”. It started life as a home to sailors, smugglers and whores, then became a literary capital, artist colony and one of the first American LGBT resorts.

1. Question: Name this Pride symbol of greek origins, which was originally chosen by the Gay Activist Alliance in New York in 1970. The GAA was a group which broke away from the larger Gay Liberation Front at the end of 1969, only six months after it's foundation in response to the Stonewall Riots. Answer: Lambda, the lower case Greek letter.
2. Question: Name this Pride symbol which has become one of the most widely used and recognised in the gay pride movement. It was developed in 1978 for the San Francisco Pride Parade. Answer: The Rainbow Flag, designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker.

1. Question: Name this gay rights group, the first recognized gay rights organization in America, established in 1924. A few months after being chartered, the police shut it down and arrested its membership. It also produced the first American publication for homosexuals. Answer: The Society for Human Rights established by Henry Gerber and a group of friends in Chicago. It published "Friendship and Freedom". Gerber had lived in Germany, where he became familiar with the early German homosexual emancipation movement led by such people as Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld.
2. Question: Name this gay rights group, the earliest lasting gay rights organization in the United States, founded in 1950. Based in Los Angeles, it had chapters in San Francisco, New York, Washington and other locales. The national group disbanded in 1961, but chapters continued to operate nationally. the group took its name from a term to describe Medieval French secret societies of masked men. The story of its founding is currently the basis for a play currently running Off-Broadway. Answer: The Mattachine Society, brainchild of Harry Hay. "The Tempermentals" with Michael ("Ugly Betty") Urie, tells the story of Hay, his lover, Rudi Gernreich, the designer, and others involved in the group's development.
3. Question: Name this gay rights group, which morphed out of the group mentioned in Question #2. In 1952, it spread its wings, and admitted lesbians to its ranks. In 1953, the group began publishing the first U.S. pro-gay publication, and sold it openly on the streets of Los Angeles. ONE also published ONE Institute Quarterly (now the Journal of Homosexuality). It began to run symposia, and contributed greatly to scholarship on the subject of same-sex love (then called 'homophile studies').

1. Question: Name this gay rights group, the first recognized gay rights organization in America, established in 1924. A few months after being chartered, the police shut it down and arrested its membership. It also produced the first American publication for homosexuals. Answer: The Society for Human Rights established by Henry Gerber and a group of friends in Chicago. It published "Friendship and Freedom". Gerber had lived in Germany, where he became familiar with the early German homosexual emancipation movement led by such people as Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld.
2. Question: Name this gay rights group, the earliest lasting gay rights organization in the United States, founded in 1950. Based in Los Angeles, it had chapters in San Francisco, New York, Washington and other locales. The national group disbanded in 1961, but chapters continued to operate nationally. the group took its name from a term to describe Medieval French secret societies of masked men. The story of its founding is currently the basis for a play currently running Off-Broadway. Answer: The Mattachine Society, brainchild of Harry Hay. "The Tempermentals" with Michael ("Ugly Betty") Urie, tells the story of Hay, his lover, Rudi Gernreich, the designer, and others involved in the group's development.
3. Question: Name this gay rights group, which morphed out of the group mentioned in Question #2. In 1952, it spread its wings, and admitted lesbians to its ranks. In 1953, the group began publishing the first U.S. pro-gay publication, and sold it openly on the streets of Los Angeles. In 1954 the U.S. Postal Service declared the magazine 'obscene'., but the group won in 1958 as part of the landmark First Amendment case, Roth v. United States. The magazine continued until 1967. Answer: ONE, Inc. ONE Magazine’s first editors included founders of Mattachine Society and also The Knights of the Clock, a support group for interracial gay couples that had begun in Los Angeles in 1950. ONE also published ONE Institute Quarterly (now the Journal of Homosexuality). It began to run symposia, and contributed greatly to scholarship on the subject of same-sex love (then called 'homophile studies').
